Choosing the Correct Badge Holder

3/12/2019

0 Comments

Finding the right badge holder may seem daunting. What size, what materials, 2-cards, 3-cards, with or without slots for lanyards?

Let’s focus on the badge holder size for today.

Most plastic ID cards are 3.375” x 2.125”, commonly known as 80/30, so you’ll need about .25” larger in both height and width – a little more if your cards will be punched.

At Bridgeway Solutions, we have a variety of vinyl and plastic badge holder options to choose from.

Our e-store badge holder item descriptions include the inner dimensions (the area in which the ID card, name tag, etc. will go) of each card holder.

These are just a few of our card holder options:
Vinyl badge holder - 3.3” x 2.5” (horizontal with slot and chain holes – Item #1815-1000
Vinyl horizontal badge holder with slot and chain holes (3.3” x 2.5”) – Item #1815-1000
2.3” x 3.38” (vinyl vertical badge holder with slot and chain holes – Item #1815-1100)
Vinyl badge holder, 2.3” x 3.38”, vertical with slot and chain holes – Item #1815-1100
Yellow Rigid Plastic Horizontal Open-Face Card Holder, 3.38" x 2.13" – Item #1840-8119
Yellow Rigid Plastic Horizontal Open-Face Card Holder, 3.38" x 2.13" – Item #1840-8119
Black Rigid Plastic Vertical 2-Sided Multi-Card Holder, 2.38" x 4.1" – Item #1840-3081

YMCKO & YMCKO-KO Plastic Card Printer Ribbons

3/8/2019

YMCKO vs YMCKOK plastic card printer ribbons
Choosing the most cost efficient and productive plastic card printer ribbon can be challenging.

What’s the difference between a YMCKO and YMCKO-KO card printer color ribbon and what do these acronyms mean?

Y =Yellow
M=Magenta,
C=Cyan
K=Black
T or O=protective top coat or overlay

YMC colors are used for full color card printing.

K is a black panel commonly used for text.

The ‘T’ or ‘O’ panel helps prevent card colors from fading, and offers some protection from scratches, dirt, and moisture.

YMCKT-KT is used in double-sided card printers, printing full color on the front and black only on the back with a top coat/overlay on both sides.

Plastic Card Printer Cleaning Cards

Plastic card printer cleaning cards help keep your machine operating its best.

There are two types of cleaning cards - presoaked in a cleaning solution and adhesive. Either will clean the printer’s rollers, which is the mechanism that pulls the cards through the printing process.

Cleaning cards remove dust, grime, and oils from blank plastic or PVC cards to prime them before they move to the printing sequence to protect the printhead and ensure quality printing.

If your card printer is producing blurry or splotchy cards, the fix may be as simple as cleaning the printer. Simply insert the cleaning card per manufacturer’s instructions so that your printer produces high quality graphics and text.

It’s a good idea to run a cleaning card through your card printer with each ribbon change.

New, boxed Datacard printer ribbons include a cleaning card. Don’t throw it away – use it.

Maintain your machine -- keep it running longer, performing at its best.

Entrust Datacard Regionalized Ribbons

3/4/2019

0 Comments

In order to provide a more consistent and quality experience for customers, Entrust Datacard created a new line of “Regional Ribbons” that are now available from licensed resellers. Regionalized ribbons help ensure that customers receive superior quality and performance from their equipment – superior quality and performance achieved only when their Datacard® system is matched with Datacard® Certified Supplies for seamless high-quality printed card output.

All CD/CE/SD printers shipped after August 2016 are regional ribbon ready. Regional settings are activated in your printer with the first use of an R010 regionalized printer ribbon.

Regional ribbons have a smaller footprint and offer less waste than legacy ribbons. Regional ribbons are more efficient, allowing Datacard to present the YMCT-KT ribbon with a higher yield than the previous version (legacy product). Regional ribbons are also less expensive than legacy ribbons due to material and manufacturing increases, so the sooner you move to regionalize printing, the more savings you will realize.

IMPORTANT – If you have legacy ribbons, you should use these first. Once you activate the regional settings by using a regional ribbon you will not be able to use legacy ribbons in YMCKT 250, YMCKT 500, ymcKT & YMCKT-KT formats.

Regional ribbons are easy to spot, even out of the box, as they are slightly shorter in ribbon height and also shorter in panel length compared to legacy ribbons. The core and cartridge are lighter and use less plastic.

How do I know if my printer is regionalized?
If your printer was shipped after August 2016, your printer already has the necessary firmware upgrade. It just isn’t activated yet. Printers become Regionalized when a regional ribbon is used in the printer. After the regional ribbon “talks” to the firmware, the printer will no longer be capable of using non-regional ribbons, specifically the YMCKT 250, YMCKT 500, ymcKT & YMCKT-KT formats. A regionalized printer will display the Region code to the left of the printer model number on the LCD screen. For the United States of America the region code is 010. Ribbons will include R010 in the item number.

Regionalized printers will not recognize a ribbon or allow printing if a ribbon from another region is used. The printer is looking for the specific region code from the initial regionalized ribbon. The following error would appear on the LCD: Supply region not valid 224.

Regionalized printers require regional ribbons for YMCKT 250, YMCKT 500, ymcKT & YMCKT-KT formats only. These item numbers include R010 for ribbons to use in North American printers. Other ribbon formats will still work in regionalized machines. All other color panel formats, monochrome and other ribbon types will continue to function as normal.

The SP & CP series card printers cannot be upgraded for use with regional ribbons and will continue to use their existing supplies. For more information, contact Bridgeway Solutions' technical support at 828-438-1676, email cathyc@bridgewayid.com
Picture
Any remaining inventory of DATACARD legacy ribbons should be used first. When you use a regional ribbon in your CD800 printer, you activate the regionalized settings in the printer firmware and will not be able to use legacy ribbons in YMCKT 250, YMCKT 500, ymcKT & YMCKT-KT formats.

Plastic Card Printer Ribbon Yields

3/1/2019

0 Comments

Plastic card printer ribbons and retransfer card printer ribbons come in several yield counts, most commonly 250 to 500 images per roll.
  • Each side of the card counts as an image. For instance, a Datacard YMCK-KT ribbon yields 350 images (Item #535700-005-R010) and would create approximately 175, 2-sided cards.
  • Monochrome card printer ribbons yield up to 1500 images per ribbon.
  • Legacy ribbons from Datacard yield slightly more images per ribbon but are more expensive. Printers with updated firmware require "regionalized" ribbons as indicated by R010 in the item number. Read more about regionalized ribbons.
Bridgeway Solutions offers card printer and retransfer printer ribbons from Zebra, Datacard, Matica, and Fargo. Call or email us to learn more. (828) 438-1676 / sales@BridgewayID.com.
