Direct-to-card id printing
Direct-to-card desktop (or dye-sublimation) printers heat a special print ribbon beneath a thermal printhead which "presses" the design directly onto the surface of a blank card. Direct-to-card printers are fast, durable, and typically less expensive per card to use. Monochrome printing is available with most direct-to-card printers.
Direct-to-card printers typically leave a very small white border around the edge of the card which may not be acceptable for some uses.
Retransfer id badge printers
Retransfer technology allows the full image to print on the surface of the card, also called over-the-edge printing. The image is printed onto a clear film and then transferred to the card, covering the full surface. Since the printhead does not directly touch the card, printheads typically last longer and produce sharper images over time.
Matica offers a micro-printing retransfer printer (XiD 8600) that can create sharp, crisp text that is so small you need a magnifying glass to read it. Perfect for an added element of security and fraud prevention.
desktop Embossing printers
Embossing card printers physically press data into the body of a plastic card or metal tag, creating a permanently raised series of characters. Typically used for financial cards and "dog" tags, the mechanical process can be combined with other printing methods for inventory management and facility tracking.
